The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum

The Early Years Foundtion Stage Framework (EYFS)

Exciting times ahead for you and your child.

The EYFS is how the Government and Early Years professionals refer to the time in you child's life between the ages of 0 to 5 years.

It is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for school as well as preparing them for their future learning and successes.

During the Foundation Stage there is a strong emphasis on learning through play experiences. The curriculum is based on Government guidance and is divided into the 7 areas of learning detailed below. Staff observe the children to assess what they are interested in and their current level of knowledge and understanding. From this information they plan activities and opportunities to ensure that all areas are covered through first hand, practical learning experiences.

We have reviewed our schools curriculum in line with the revision of the EYFS which came into effect in September 2021, the new format is a 'work in progress' which will be continually reviewed and revised as necessary during the year but details of our initial curriculum can be found on both the Preschool and Nursery Class pages. 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We help children to develop respect for themselves and others whilst building positive relationships with adults and peers. All children will be encouraged to increase their self confidence, resilience and independence skills, whilst developing a positive attitude to learning

Communication and language

Children are encouraged to listen attentively, talk about their experiences and use language in a variety of ways to communicate with adults and peers. We will help them to develop their understanding and extend their vocabulary.

Physical Development

Children will be taught to move confidently and imaginatively with increasing control and coordination during outdoor play activities and in P.E. activities. They will develop increasing skill and control with small apparatus such as bats, balls, hoops, beanbags and quoits. Fine motor control will be developed using tools, scissors, small construction equipment and malleable materials like dough and clay.


Maths is taught through stories, songs, games, imaginative and practical activities. Children are taught to use mathematical language to describe and compare shapes, position, size and quantity. Through a variety of activities, children will be taught to count, and encouraged to write and use numbers . In day to day activities the children will become familiar with numbers, shapes, spaces and solving problems in the real world.


Early reading skills will be taught using a variety of books, text and print in the environment. Children learn to develop a love of books and to use them effectively to retell stories and predict what might happen. They are also encouraged to explore mark making as an introduction to writing they will be encouraged to use pictures, symbols, letters and familiar words to communicate meaning. Children will also have the opportunity to begin to learn about phonics, the sounds in words and the letters that represent them, and to learn how to write their name using appropriate upper and lower case letters and correct letter formation.

Understanding the World

This area of learning develops the children’s understanding of the environment, people around them and features of the natural and man-made world. Children will be encouraged to be curious, ask questions, investigate and explore different aspects of the world they live in. This will provide a foundation for historical, geographical, scientific and technological learning.

Expressive arts and design

Children will be encouraged to use their imagination and express their ideas and feelings using a wide range of materials. In dance, role play, painting, model making and music, children will develop their creative and imaginative skills
